This picture was taken during the summer of 2007 in Kalibo Aklan, Philippines. I’m that little girl with her hair in cornrows and that’s my Ate Ruchel. She is my step-lola’s niece and also my best friend. We met when I went to visit my family for the first time in the Philippines. It was a very emotional time for my dad, since he hadn’t seen my Lolo in over 10 years. Ruchel took care of me while I stayed in their home. She would wake up before the sun rose to make us breakfast, go off to school, come home at lunch to make us more food, go back to school, and come home to start dinner. She is amazing. She listened to me. She played games with me. But most importantly, she loved me. Even though she’s thousands of miles away, she is always there for me. We were pen pals (: and then we started contacting each other through facebook. She has truly been the perfect best friend to me. She would write me letters, check up on me once a month, at least, and even though we don’t talk for long periods of time, we can resume our friendship like nothing changed since 5 years ago when I first met her. She went through all of her schooling and aspired to be a teacher. She can do anything. I believe in her. One day I want to go visit her again and we can spend the whole time on Boracay buying each other bracelets and running around on the beach like the old days. I love you so much Ate Ruchel and I miss you so much <3
